ABOUT US: Edith Munubbe founded DVS in 2001 after early retirement from teaching to work with communities. She is very enthusiastic about voluntarism which unfortunately is seldom practiced amongst the youth in Kenya. At this stage all staff are volunteers. Edith operates the Nairobi Office from her home which is, as well as an office and hosting home. If necessary and need be we get local families to host our volunteers if the placements are in rural areas and not in Nairobi.
PROFILE: Andrew(Andy) with his host.
Desteens Volunteering Services(DVS)is based in Nairobi, Kenya. We are registered as a
Community Based Organization(CBO).We are CBO aiming at making aware voluntarism
amongst the community and to benefit from the services given to them by these volunteers. We make volunteering readily available to people who are seeking to assist others and to learn from their volunteer experiences, which relate to social service or to the natural environment, anywhere around Kenya.
Since the time DVS was formed we had been assisting other CBOs in their work by sending the volunteers that we get. Fortunately, through the advice and hard work of the volunteers we get, we have started in Eastland a Community Based Organization called Repair Kenya Eco-system. Aninitiative that isBuilding the Roots of Kenya's Prosperity & Restored Eco-Systems. We intendall our volunteers to assisting in our projects but if need be, we can do placements in other CBOs working in the same field we are working
The Mizizi that we will root will improve the quality of lifelihood for the people in both urban and rural Kenya. Our initial work-camps will be in both Nairobi and on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. Together with volunteers that we get, we expected to assist people in this areas develop income solid generation enterprises and utilize revolving funds to launch their enterprises. Train people in how to succeed economically, how to solve different obstacles and assist and work with each other towards better livelihood.
Quality Life: Nairobi's Slums are devastated environments with open sewers, garbage and no trees. People are without jobs leaving in poverty and a dollar a day to feed some a family of 5-8kids.
We educate them on better live through our projects that assure them of hope. We teach them on how to create Kitchen gardens that can feed their family on daily basis and start up small scale business through getting farm produce from up country projects that we have already set. These two groups are in dire need of anything that can better their livelihood and they will tap any skills brought by volunteers or any one else.
Youth and Education: Our vision is to not only transform the immediate world that we live in, but to teach people how to be the change-makers. We have strong youth program that builds on the strengths of our youth through sports, drama and music. It promotes literacy, engagement and leadership skills
Vision:
1. To promote voluntarism in Kenya especially amongst our youth, to assist our poorer communities with community work and to institute youth exchange programmes with other countries.
2. To carry out the mission and vision of Repair Kenya as stipulated on our proposals.
Mission:To identify volunteer placements to suit both volunteers and our organization that is improving the Kenyan poor people's livelihood. Giving services too to local institutions and the community based organizations (CBOs) that need participating volunteers for the successful operation of their projects at a minimal cost giving chance to overseas youth to volunteer with us during summer or Gap year.
